The coolest neighborhoods in Latin America, a 2019 selection
In all the cities of the world there is a specific area where architecture, culture, nightlife, restaurants, art and even people make it a special place to visit or live. The Time Out site surveyed more than 27,000 inhabitants of cities around the world and selected the best neighborhoods in the most important metropolis.

According to the magazine, the selection can help travelers and tourists to pass as “locals” and understand the dynamics and life in some of the most beautiful cities in the world. The selection, according to Time Out, was made by its team of editors and experts after more than 27,000 votes from city residents around the world. Arroios, in Lisbon (Portugal), was chosen as the “coolest” neighborhood on the planet because it is a place where not only eating is a delight, but also where “the new coexists with the classic and diversity is everywhere”.

Shimokitazawa, baptized as the “Brooklyn” of Tokyo (Japan); Onikan, in Lagos (Nigeria); Wedding, in Berlin (Germany) and the Historic Filipinotown of Los Angeles follow it on the list as those neighborhoods where modernity and history, fun and traditions blend and offer a unique panorama of life in the city. Several neighborhoods in Latin America also sneaked into the list of the 50 “coolest” in the world. Here we tell you what they are.
Jalatlaco (Oaxaca, Mexico, 17th place)
It is a place of entrenched traditions located in the downtown area of the Oaxaca capital. In its cobbled streets lined with colorful houses and street art, new galleries, designer shops and restaurants are now emerging. During the Day of the Dead (November 2) the streets are filled with people who join the neighborhood party. And the rest of the year, you can stroll along the picturesque Miguel Hidalgo street with Mexican flags waving high, and Aldama street to enjoy urban art and have a coffee in one of the local restaurants.

Juarez (Mexico City, Mexico, 19th place)
This place in Mexico City offers a world of cultural options where you can enjoy museums, cinemas, theaters, galleries and outdoor concerts. Very close to the Paseo de la Reforma Avenue, considered the most beautiful in the Mexican capital, and the Zona Rosa, which is the right place to enjoy the nightlife of this metropolis, with its wide variety of bars, restaurants, places for dance and karaokes, in an inclusive environment for all people. During the spring, the huge jacaranda trees paint the streets of this neighborhood full of culture and diversity in lilac. If you want to stay a few days, in the area you will find hotels for all types of budgets.

Bom Retiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil, 25th place)
The Bom Retiro neighborhood has been the first to host many of the immigrant communities, from Italians to Jews, Koreans and Bolivians who have found their home there. Located in the historic center, ‘Bomra’, as it is affectionately known to the locals, has long been recognized as one of the best places to eat in Sao Paulo, for its great gastronomic variety of its restaurants and bars. The Pinacoteca do Estado de Sao Paulo is the oldest art gallery in the city, which supports the young artists of the community.

Barranco (Lima, Peru, 30th place)
The district of Barranco, one of the 43 that make up the province of Lima, has among its many privileges the proximity of the sea, which gives a magical touch to its sunsets and a very cool night for its youth bars. “The 1920 architecture of the faded Art Deco mansions and leafy boulevards are part of its appeal, but its artistic roots are also deep”, says Time Out.

Old Havana (Havana, Cuba, 39th place)
And with its almost 500 years could not miss not only the oldest neighborhood of the capital of Cuba, but one of the most nostalgic and beautiful enclaves of the colonial past of Latin America: Old Havana. It was there that the city was founded in November 1519 and where much of the city’s life still transits: from its port to the new private businesses that have begun to flourish in recent years.

In Venice there are 455 bridges. Surely you think that it is the city in Europe with the largest number of them. But let me tell you that it is not so. If you are surprised to see all that amount, I tell you that Berlin has a total of 1700 bridges. The German city is in a continuous dispute with Paris to make them more beautiful and eye-catching each time.

Coins from the Trevi Fountain
Thousands of tourists go every day to throw coins at the Trevi Fountain in Rome. The symbolism is that they make a wish and this is fulfilled according to some characteristics. It is a ritual that is already more of a myth and that was born with the 1954 film Three Coins in the Fountain. According to the film, throwing the coins had the following meaning:
- One coin is to return to Rome.
- Two is to find the love of your life in an Italian.
- Three is to marry the person you already know.
