The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) has achieved a historic milestone thanks to a new comet discovered, the 4,000th this satellite has detected since its launch in 1995.

A discoverer with a keen eye
He new comet discovered SOHO-4000 we owe it to the Norwegian amateur astronomer and geophysicist Trygve Prestgard, who has to his credit the discovery of at least 120 celestial bodies around the Sun.

According to the coordinator of the Sunglazer project, Karl Battams, this closeness could be a sign that just a few years ago both comets were part of a single celestial object.
In this case, comet discoveries as these were not the product of chance, but the result of a combination of observations and measurements from the SOHO satellite and the Parker solar probe.
The Parker solar probe, named after the American physicist Eugene Parker, was launched on August 12, 2018 with the mission of analyze the solar atmosphere.
June, the best month to find kites
Starting in June, the Solar Parker probe began its fifth “spin” around the Sun, so it was decided to increase the number of times SOHO captured images through its LASCO instrument.
In addition, the exposure time of each captured image was doubled, which would allow SOHO to detect smaller objects than normal, which would then be captured in better detail by the Solar Parker probe.
